Security assessments regardless of facility, follow
a general functional outline. The depth and
breadth of the review rests with tne needs of the
client. The objectives of the assessment
concentrate largely on asset protection and the
safety of employees, visitors and invitees.
Each type of facility will have special needs either
identified by management or because of the nature of
the business. Assets do not necessarily need
to be tangible. Information security, payroll,
trade secrets and other mission-critical areas have
their own vulnerabilities. No security
protocol or hardware completely protects you.
Given enough time and resources anyone can breach
even the most sophisticated security elements.
Aspects of your security program that
should be regularly reviewed:
Lighting: Do you have the
recommended lumens in your parking lots, doorways, and common areas?
Does your alarm system have a cellular back
up?
Perimeter physical security: What
considerations are there for fencing and outer doors/windows?
Access control and policies: Who
manages your access control? How often is it reviewed for
accuracy? What is your visitor policy and how is it maintained?
Review of security related equipment:
How old is that VCR (If it is a VCR it's time to go digital)? Planning on going digital?
Review of periodic auditing efforts:
Do you have a self audit program?
Review of physical layout and age of
equipment such as CCTV, access control systems, lighting, emergency
systems.
How are you preventing or deterring
employee theft?
